Description

The principle purpose of this position is to investigate and prepare pending General Session's cases for the assigned Assistant Solicitors. The work is performed under the direction of the Chief and Deputy Chief Investigator, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, victims, witnesses, Police, Medical Examiner, Coroner, attorneys, outside organizations and the general public.

This position requires availability for 24 hour call out concerning Solicitor case investigations and assistance to local law enforcement. The principle duties of this position are performed at the Solicitors Office, in the courtroom, at crime scenes and in the field where personal safety is a consideration and where exposure to violent criminals, hazardous materials and potentially hazardous bodily fluids may exist.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $54,038 to $70,761 (Estimated Annual Salary)

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include:

• Review and evaluate investigative reports and prosecutive summaries and inform the assigned Assistant Solicitor as needed concerning work progress, to include present and potential problems and provide suggestions to address said problems.

• Review crime scenes: take photos, collect evidence, draw diagrams, etc., to include availability for 24 hour call out while on rotating duty shift.

• The location of displaced/moved witnesses, as well as the transportation of witnesses and victims to pre-trial conferences and trials, to include the transportation of cooperating defendants for interviews and proffering.

• Collect pre-trial information: evidence, police reports, evaluations, SLED reports, audio/video, maps, etc.

• Interview and take sworn statements from witnesses, victims, and law enforcement personnel, to include proffering cooperating defendants.

• Issue legal process: subpoenas, court orders, family court rules and summons, search warrants, arrest warrants, etc.

• Acts as liaison with local, State and Federal law enforcement, as well as the general public, attorneys and government officials at all levels

• Assists in orienting new assistant solicitors and support staff concerning investigative/law enforcement procedures and practices pertinent to solicitor case preparation.

• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions, to include reviewing publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices and new developments in our assigned work areas, to include fulfillment of the annual State requirements concerning law enforcement certification.

• Maintains proficiency with issued duty pistol.

This position involves exposure to outside elements, violent criminals, police vehicle operation, the general public, criminal evidence, hazmat and hazardous body fluids which create a potentially dangerous work environment that could lead to great bodily injury or death.
Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree, supplemented with six (6) or more years of considerable experience in Law Enforcement with an emphasis on Criminal Investigative experience.

Certifications: This position requires a Law Enforcement Certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, or other recognized Law Enforcement agency.

Certification from the South Carolina Justice Academy; annual SCCJA training for firearms; legal 's update and defensive driving.
