Job Description Summary
The Department of Surgery, Office of the Chair, is actively recruiting for a Communications Manager.
Job Duties30% Project Management – Manages multiple communications projects simultaneously in the areas of research, education and clinical care; manages an active communication agenda keeping all related parties up to date on project status; manages production schedule of all print projects including the annual report, monthly e‑news, and special event print projects; creates communications and marketing plans for special events.
30% Department of Surgery Marketing & Communications Coordination – Leads branding, design, and distribution for the department’s marketing and communication materials; leads strategic development and production of the annual report, Chair’s newsletter, website, social media, and all other communications vehicles; supports new faculty onboarding process to optimize timely marketing; creates stewardship pieces for high‑profile philanthropic donors; develops and produces stewardship articles and announcements;
serves as communication liaison between the Department of Surgery Development Office and other units.30% Publications, Print Media, Web Content and Digital Asset Management – With minimal direction, writes and edits a broad range of content, including print, digital, social, and video, to communicate the department’s strategies, accomplishments, and faculty expertise; creates original content and news releases for internal and external purposes; reviews and updates department web pages with attention to SEO and design; ensures consistency with MUSC brand and web guidelines;
collaborates with program coordinators to maintain web pages; manages and maintains the department’s digital assets; serves as interview, writer, and editor of annual report, newsletters, chair communications and speeches; serves as department photographer; coordinates conception, execution and production of digital media.10% Consulting – Serves as an internal marketing and communication consultant for programs and services.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet shifting deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and leadership.
- Working knowledge of digital design tools and templates (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint).
- Basic understanding of branding principles and ability to apply brand standards consistently.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage timelines, approvals, and documentation.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, handle sensitive information appropriately, and maintain confidentiality.
- Self‑motivated, adaptable, and willing to learn new tools, platforms, and processes as needed.
A bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant program experience.
Physical RequirementsAbility to perform job functions in an upright position (frequent), seated position (frequent), while walking/mobile (frequent). Ability to work indoors (continuous). Ability to work outdoors in all weather and temperature extremes (infrequent). Ability to work in confined/cramped spaces (infrequent). Ability to fully use both hands/arms (frequent). Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (frequent).
