Charleston Animal Society – Berkeley Campus – is seeking a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to lead, support, and inspire our volunteer team.
Full-time, Exempt
Schedule:
Tuesday – Saturday , 8am – 5pm, over as needed.
The Volunteer Coordinator provides hands‑on support and training to volunteers while working alongside them in daily shelter operations. This includes animal care, cleaning, and assisting with shelter activities both indoors and outdoors. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can build positive relationships, manage diverse personalities, and maintain accountability to ensure that all volunteers uphold the organization’s mission and standards.
This position plays a key role in creating a respectful and mission‑driven volunteer culture. The Volunteer Coordinator must be comfortable addressing performance issues, including coaching and, when necessary, dismissing volunteers who are not adhering to organizational expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Provide guidance, training, and ongoing support to new and existing volunteers.
- Schedule orientations and coordinate training within assigned departments.
- Work side‑by‑side with volunteers during animal care, cleaning, and shelter operations.
- Ensure volunteers are knowledgeable, confident, and aligned with the organization’s mission.
- Organize and manage volunteers for off‑site events, including fundraisers, adoptions, and third‑party activities.
- Maintain open, professional communication with volunteers through meetings, calls, and email updates.
- Serve as a liaison between staff and volunteers to promote teamwork and resolve issues effectively.
- Schedule volunteers to ensure adequate coverage during peak times and plan for last‑minute absences.
- Address and resolve volunteer conduct issues in a professional and timely manner, following established procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict‑resolution skills with the ability to manage strong personalities diplomatically.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with attention to detail.
- Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and scheduling software.
- Flexible availability, including some weekends and evenings.
- Comfortable with the physical and emotional aspects of shelter work, including cleaning, handling animals, and outdoor tasks in various weather conditions.
- Self‑motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
