Job Description Summary

The successful applicant will be a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant interested in working full‑time in the care of patients requiring Palliative Care in our outpatient Adult Palliative Care clinics. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will join a busy and thriving Adult Palliative Care team that includes 7 Faculty, 2 Fellows, 4 inpatient APPs, 3 Palliative Telehealth APPs, and 2 Adult Palliative outpatient APPs in a growing practice.

Outpatient Palliative Care services include symptom management, care coordination with the patient’s other medical providers, ongoing discussions regarding treatment choices, and quality of life goals. Our outpatient care team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, social workers, and nurses. MUSC’s Palliative Care program received a 2019 Circle of Life Citation of Honor from the American Hospital Association and has been recognized with a multi-year Duke Endowment grant to help expand Palliative Care across the state of South Carolina in collaboration with MUSC’s National Telehealth Center of Excellence.

Position

Details

Salary/Exempt, scheduled weekly hours 40 (36 clinical), Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

  • Physician Assistant or APRN License Type/Certification
    :
    • AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP):
      Adult pts (18 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
    • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
  • Preferred Experience: Minimum of 5 years as a PA, ANP, or FNP with at least 1 year of experience in a palliative care setting preferred.

Degree of Supervision: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:
Basic Life Support (BLS). DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
  • Participates in multi-specialty Palliative Care team meetings
  • Helps educate medical students, residents, nurses, physician colleagues and other hospital staff about Palliative Care principles and practices
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care and access to appropriate support models of care, i.e. hospice, rehabilitation, ongoing aggressive treatment
