Summary
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist provides anesthesia care to a wide variety of patients from pre‑term neonates to geriatrics. Administers appropriate anesthetics in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist in a manner consistent with standards of practice. Familiar with anesthesia machines and related equipment; assists in transport of patients; maintains adequate patient records; participates in teaching activities of the department; participates in continuing education programs;
and demonstrates a high level of professionalism in the performance of duties. Provides resuscitative care as indicated.

- The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital – pediatric Level‑One academic trauma center with 8 OR suites, 2 cardiac cath labs, endoscopy suites, and non‑OR sites (CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, heme‑oncology). Covers all pediatric surgical specialties.
- The University Hospital – central receiving unit of a Level‑One trauma center with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties. Non‑OR sites include CT, MRI, bronch, neuro‑angio and interventional radiology. Practice group of ~42 CRNAs, self‑scheduling, 10‑hour shifts, 13.5‑hour shifts, 24‑hour night coverage.
- The MUSC Ashley River Towers – adult academic facility with 10 ORs and robust NORA practice (endoscopy, heart & vascular, interventional radiology). OR coverage includes surgical oncology, colorectal, bariatrics, plastics, occasional vascular/thoracic.
- Rutledge Tower Ambulatory Surgery – 9 ORs for adult outpatient & inpatient populations. Service groupings: ENT, oral surgery, adult dentistry, ophthalmology, plastics, gynecology, urology, pain management, orthopedics, surgical oncology, endocrine, colorectal.
Up to $50,000 sign‑on bonus available for certain sites – available for external candidates.
Minimum Training and Education- Graduate of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs approved program and certified or recertified by the National Board on Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. Must be insurable by MUSC medical malpractice insurer.
- For hires after March 1, 2019, a master’s degree or higher in Nurse Anesthesia required.
- Current competency in clinical privileges, proficiency in anesthesia equipment operation, current knowledge of anesthesia practice and safety, basic knowledge of universal precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with surgeons, residents, anesthesia personnel, and nursing staff. Practices under anesthesiologist clinical supervision and CRNA manager administrative supervision.
- Recognized as an APRN or eligible, with current license to practice or eligible to obtain practice in South Carolina.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association.
Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes, from elevated areas, in confined spaces, kneeling, bending at the waist, twisting at the waist, squatting, pinching operations, gross and fine motor activities, reach overhead, repetitive wrist/elbow/shoulder motions, use both legs, balance and coordination, reach in all directions, lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted, lift/lower 50 lbs from floor to 36 in.,
lift 36 in. to overhead 25 lbs, exert up to 50 lbs of force. Maintain 20/40 vision (corrected), peripheral vision, hearing acuity (corrected). Perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. Deal with stressful situations. Work rotating shifts, overtime as required, latex safe environment, maintain tactile sensory functions. (Selected positions: maintain olfactory function, respirator qualification.)
