Neonatology Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

Overview

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant provides specialized inpatient neonatal and newborn care, managing a caseload of patients from birth to age 2 in collaboration with neonatologists. They perform comprehensive assessments, diagnose, and develop individualized treatment plans, exercising independent clinical judgment.

• Conduct history-taking, physical exams, and interpret diagnostic tests
• Perform advanced procedures (e.g., intubation, line placements, thoracentesis, lumbar punctures)
• Initiate referrals, document care, and ensure compliance with clinical guidelines
• Use evidence-based practices and participate in quality improvement and research activities
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support staff education
• Develop and monitor care plans, order tests, and interpret findings
• Lead neonatal resuscitations and manage high-risk deliveries
• Maintain professional certifications and licenses

• Completion of an accredited PA or Nurse Practitioner program, with relevant neonatal ICU experience for PAs or neonatal specialization for APRNs
• Current licensure and certifications (e.g., Neonatal Resuscitation)
• Proficiency in neonatal physical assessment, specialized equipment, and critical care procedures
• Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills
• Ability to function independently in high-acuity environments and serve as a clinical leader
• Physical ability to perform demanding tasks and procedures, including lifting and working in confined spaces

The role involves rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with a focus on safety, compliance, and continuous professional development.
