Job Description Summary
The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to work full time in the Pediatric Heart Center.
The Heart Center is located in the Shawn Jenkin’s Children Hospital that opened in 2020, a 29‑bed medical–surgical unit staffed by board‑certified cardiologists, cardiac intensivists, highly skilled nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, child life specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers and social workers.

40 hours per week, rotating 13‑hour shifts (daytime, nights, weekends)
- Focus:
Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) and Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Unit - Age range: 0–21 + years
Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant

* * completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
- PA – Physician Assistant: accredited program and licensure/eligibility required.
- PCPNP/PNP – Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: pediatric patients (birth to 21 years), stable chronic disease management or primary‑care setting.
- FNP – Family Nurse Practitioner: birth to death, stable chronic disease management, primary care across lifespan.
- Physician Assistant or APRN with PACNP – Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner: pediatric patients (birth to 21 years) acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable or technologically dependent.
- Previous experience as an APP in an ICU or step‑down environment, and/or pediatric and congenital heart disease experience.
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- DHEC and DEA license applications must be initiated prior to first day.
- Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations.
- Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, radiology, laboratory, and other diagnostic results pursuant to the scope of practice guideline.
- Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges approved by the Clinical Division Chief.
- Initiates referrals or consults with the attending or collaborating physician.
- Documents and bills for direct care provided.
- Utilizes current research and evidence‑based decision‑making in all clinical practice.
- Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
- Supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
- Engages in professional organizations and continuing education to maintain professional practice.
- Potentially precepts students and facilitates learning of new team members.
- Maintains necessary licenses, certifications, and continuing education credits as required by applicable policies and state law.
Continuous standing, walking, and sitting are required. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive hand/wrist/elbow/shoulder motions, and work in a latex‑safe indoor environment. Must be able to lift, lower, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 lb unassisted, exert up to 50 lb of force.
May need to lift from 36 in to overhead 25 lb. Ability to work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces as needed.
