Job Summary

Provides clinical direction for all aspects of patient care in an outpatient setting. Demonstrates clinical competency utilizing evidence-based practices/research in all areas of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and outcomes. Incorporates knowledge of safety protocols, cost containment and quality improvement throughout the nursing process. Identifies patient, unit, and organizational priorities and incorporates into the nursing process. Adheres to all compliance and policy and procedure requirements of the organization including, but not limited to licensure renewal, assigned training, employee health screenings, time and attendance policy, dress code policy, patient confidentiality, infection control, medication administration.

Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory agency requirements (JCAHO, DHEC). Provides care within the scope of the SC Nursing Practice Act. The outpatient setting usually does not require staff to be scheduled for a significant amount of shift, weekend, holiday, and on-call work.

  • Provides direct nursing care within established policies, procedures, and protocols and in accordance with regulatory scope of practice and Board of Nursing in the state in which work is performed.

  • Provides advanced patient care based upon individualized plan of care including patient’s physical, emotional, cultural, spiritual, psychosocial, and educational needs.

  • Maintains an advanced knowledge base of disease entities, medications, and treatments specific to the medicine specialty practice that performs specialized procedures using advanced tools and monitoring.

  • Performs or assists with procedures specific to the specialty (e.g., chemotherapy, IUI, nitrous oxide administration, insulin therapy, etc.).

  • Conduct in-depth assessments and monitoring specific to the specialty, which may involve specialized diagnostic tests and managing complex treatments.

  • Focuses on targeted, complex, advanced care and performs specialized procedures or treatments and administers prescribed medications.

  • Utilizes the unique knowledge, skills, and competencies required in ambulatory care nursing practice to promote wellness, restore health, and address health-related situational problems.

  • Assess patients’ needs and applies advanced ambulatory care nursing knowledge and evidence-based nursing practice when developing an individualized plan of care for each patient.

  • Coordinates, and documents patient care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and consistent manner. This includes patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety.

  • Delegates tasks and duties to healthcare team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the team member’s capabilities and qualifications.

  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.

  • Communicates appropriate information regarding patient condition or concerns to other health care team members.

  • Educates patients and families to appropriately perform any recommended post-visit self-care tasks.

  • Integrates patient and family education throughout the delivery of care so they may make informed health related decisions.

  • Provides a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.

  • Serves as a role model and participates in educating and mentoring other members of the care team.

  • Attends department and organization meetings.

  • Completes annual and as needed compliance training.

  • Practices safe, efficient use of supplies and resources.

  • Maintains a clean, safe, and caring environment for patients, family and other staff.

  • Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education.

  • May serve as a preceptor, unit champion, or participate in shared governance.

  • Adheres to all compliance, policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
