Job DescriptionThe ECMO Specialist is defined by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization as “the technical specialist trained to manage the ECMO system (blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator, and related equipment); as well as pertinent maintenance and emergency procedures and the clinical needs of the patient on ECMO (such as maintenance of normal acid-base balance, oxygenation and ventilation, anticoagulation) under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician.
The ECMO Specialist should have a strong critical care background as a nurse or respiratory therapist in neonatal, pediatric, cardiac, or adult populations. Additionally, they have attained licensure as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, certified perfusionist, or physician. The Medical University of South Carolina has chosen to support an ECMO Specialist Team comprised of registered nurses and respiratory therapists from within the intensive care units.
The ECMO Specialist is additionally responsible for collaborating with bedside RN, physicians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care for these very complex patients in the ICU.
