Position: UNIV - Research Specialist I - Pharmacology and Immunology

Job Overview

The Nozaki lab, based at MUSC, aims to uncover fundamental understanding of intestinal immunity during infection and inflammation, especially by focusing on cell death pathways and their associated mechanisms. The lab also seeks to elucidate how intestinal inflammation affects tumor evolution and the tumor microenvironment, and how these mechanisms can be applied to therapeutics.

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, a Research Specialist I is needed to support immunology research for the analysis of mouse gut tissues and cells. Responsibilities include mouse maintenance, sample preparation and analysis for PCR/qPCR, Western blot, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, as well as maintaining instrumentation and laboratory resources. Experience in these techniques is a plus but not required; training will be provided.

Responsibilities
  • 30% Performs preparation of mouse tissues for analysis, including dissection, tissue harvesting, histopathology analysis, cell culture, molecular cloning, cell transfection/infection, quantitative real‑time PCR, Western blot, immunostaining, microscopy, and flow cytometry.
  • 20% Performs mouse colony maintenance including breeding and genotyping.
  • 15% Maintains laboratory equipment by performing checklist system suitability and required maintenance.
  • 15% Assists in ordering reagents and laboratory supplies, maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant laboratory environment, including labeling and inspection of items and solutions.
  • 10% Maintains a detailed notebook of experiments and locations of data storage.
  • 10% Assists in preparing grant writing and IACUC protocols and amendments when appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry, biology, or related life/health sciences.
  • Experience with mouse genetics, PCR/qPCR, Western blot, flow cytometry, or immunofluorescence.
MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma and two years of work experience in a clinical or research setting.
  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or another natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
Physical Requirements

• Continuous 6‑8 hours per shift ability to perform job functions in an upright position.
• Frequent 2‑6 hours per shift ability to perform job functions in a seated position.
• Continuous 8‑12 hours per shift ability to walk or be mobile.
• Infrequent ability to climb using step stool.
• Ability to work in temperature extremes (32° °F to 100° °F).
• Ability to work in confined or cramped spaces.
• Ability to bend, twist, and reach at all directions.
• Ability to lift up to 20 lbs unassisted and lift 4‑liter waste bottles up to 30 ft.
• Ability to lift or carry 25–30 lbs jugs up to 100 ft unassisted.
• Ability to lift and carry 25‑lbs boxes up to 72 ft.
• Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops up to 50 lbs unassisted.
• Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, and discriminate colors normally.
• Ability to hear alarms, understand conversations, and work in a darkroom.
• Ability to be qualified for respirator use initially and annually.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, and learn new tools and equipment.
