Job Description Summary

Postdoctoral Scholar (Delgado Lab)

Job Purpose

Working together with PI with minimal supervision, engineer and carry out a variety of projects ranging in complexity that drive the productivity of the group while dovetailing with the efforts of additional lab members. Responsible for independently managing research direction, design and implementation of projects in the lab. Responsible for assisting lab management and technical staff in basic lab maintenance to keep the lab organized.

Assist in the maintenance and management of animal research colony and when delegated responsibility by PI or lab manager for animal care, husbandry, and experimental design. Directly supervise and act as point of contact for junior lab members such as students, postdocs and junior technicians. Drive an independent research project collectively resulting in manuscript preparation and dissemination of results to the field in the form of attending research conferences to present work.

Doctorate degree in chemistry, biology, medicine or other natural, life or health care science

Preferred Requirements

Two years advanced journal level work experience in a clinical or research setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Analysis and interpretation of results from independent projects are expected. Corroborating results with literature and independently designing next steps while communicating work with the lab during meetings is expected. Experience supporting graduate students, postdocs and all technical laboratory staff regarding guiding data and result interpretation as well as troubleshooting. Expected to have immediate experience maintaining and managing animal colonies, animal protocol development, institutional biosafety protocol development and maintaining the lab in compliance with all institutional guidelines.

Experience with live animal survival surgeries and procedures as well as teaching other lab members procedures and surgeries. Experience in histochemical techniques, proteomics, tissue culture and advanced microscopy are required. Experience training and supporting junior members of the lab is critical. As an active member of the lab, experience communicating and disseminating research results from the lab via conferences, publications and presentations is required.

Experience and knowledge of institutional resources regarding core facilities is required. Ultimately able to work and supervise independently with excellent multitasking skills.

Guidelines and supervision

Working independently is expected. Formal supervision in the form of lab meetings or one-on one productivity meetings should be the minimum requirement.

Job Responsibilitie s
  • 35% - Independently design, execute, troubleshoot and interpret complex experiments using murine models and patient samples, molecular, cellular and computational approaches. Coordinate and manage multiple parallel research projects insuring a timely completion of research milestones. Conduct, implement and teach complex survival surgeries and procedures on immunocompromised and immunocompetent mice. Independent data analysis is critical. This entails, but is not limited to, the analysis of multispectral immunohistochemical images from mouse and patients, flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, and proteomics.

    Develop innovative and independent research questions and experimental approaches that complement and advance the objectives of the laboratory.
  • 25% - Lead collaborations with other investigators throughout the institution and extramural institutions that directly benefit independent project development and the goals of the laboratory.
