Job Description Summary
The de Cubas Laboratory at the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina is recruiting a Research Specialist I to contribute to cutting‑edge research at the intersection of cancer biology and immunology. Our work focuses on understanding how genetic alterations such as SETD2 loss influence tumor immunogenicity and therapeutic response. By combining molecular biology, cell‑based systems, and mouse models, we seek to translate mechanistic discoveries into strategies that improve cancer treatment.
Job DescriptionThe selected candidate will perform, assist, and maintain a range of laboratory activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform a number of molecular biology procedures (35%) – isolation/purification of proteins and nucleic acids, and analysis by immunoblot.
- Cell culture and in‑vitro functional assays (30%) – maintaining cell lines and performing various assays.
- Assist with daily laboratory operations (25%) – stocking consumables and reagents, making buffers, aliquoting reagents.
- Perform routine maintenance of and experimentation in mice (10%) – weighing, measuring, treating mice, ensuring compliance with IACUC protocols, aiding inspections.
Skills and Abilities
- Previous experience in a laboratory.
- Strong organizational, record‑keeping, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to perform calculations, follow experimental procedures, and develop independence with tasks and experiments.
- Prior experience working with mice is valued.
- Availability for occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work.
- Meticulous organization and attention to detail; all personnel maintain laboratory notebooks.

Physical RequirementsContinuous work requires 6–8 hours per shift. The role involves upright and seated positions, walking and mobile tasks, using a step stool, working in temperature extremes (32° F to 100°
F), confined spaces, bending, twisting, repetitive hand movements, lifting up to 20 lb, and other duties listed in the detailed physical requirements. The position may require rotating shifts, overtime, and the ability to learn new procedures, tools, and equipment.
