We are recruiting a Research Specialist I in the de Cubas Laboratory at the Hollings Cancer Center, Medical University of South Carolina, to support cutting‑edge research at the intersection of cancer biology and immunology. The role involves understanding how genetic alterations such as SETD2 loss influence tumor immunogenicity and therapeutic response, and translating mechanistic discoveries into strategies that improve cancer treatment.

Job Duties
  • Perform cell culture and in‑vitro functional assays (30%). Maintenance of cell lines, viability/migration assays, transfections, and infections.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of mice and related experiments (25%). Breeding, weaning, genotyping, agent treatment, animal colony management, and IACUC protocol compliance.
  • Assist with daily laboratory operations (20%). Stock consumables, prepare buffers, aliquot reagents, and coordinate maintenance and cleaning of the research space.
  • Execute molecular biology procedures (20%). Isolation and purification of nucleic acids and proteins, PCR, western blot, plasmid cloning, immunoprecipitation, and downstream analyses.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator (5%). This may include preparing protocols, figures, and related documentation.
  • Work may require occasional weekend, holiday, or evening hours.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or a related natural or life science.
  • One year of work experience directly related to the assigned research area.
  • Demonstrated experience in western blotting, RT‑qPCR, and cell culture.
  • Prior laboratory experience, with preference for those familiar with animal husbandry, colony management, recombinant DNA work, and RNA and protein analysis.
  • Strong organizational, record‑keeping, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform complex calculations, follow detailed experimental procedures, and work independently.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a laboratory notebook.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related life science with research experience.
  • Experience with animal work and recombinant DNA techniques.
