UNIV - Research Specialist I - Department of Pharmacology & Immunology

Job Summary

The Wang Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology & Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina is recruiting a Research Specialist I to contribute to cutting‑edge research in cancer immunology. The position focuses on understanding how genetic alterations in cancer cells influence tumor progression and therapeutic response.

• Cell culture and in‑vitro functional assays (30%): maintaining cell lines, proliferation, migration analysis, transformations, transfections, infections.
• Routine maintenance of and experimentation in mice (25%): breeding and weaning, genotyping, treatment with agents, managing colonies, ensuring adherence to IACUC protocols.
• Assist with daily lab operations (20%): stocking consumables and reagents, preparing buffers, aliquoting reagents, maintaining research space, coordinating repairs, waste disposal, and cleaning.
• Perform molecular biology experiments (20%): isolation and purification of nucleic acids and proteins, PCR, Western blot, plasmid cloning, immunoprecipitation; adjust experiments to project needs.
• Additional duties (5%): assist PI with lab protocols, prepare figures, and other tasks.

• High school diploma and two years of work experience in a clinical or research setting, or a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related life science.
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or life sciences preferred.
• Previous laboratory experience required; familiarity with western blotting, PCR, cell culture, recombinant DNA work, RNA, and protein analysis preferred.
• Strong organizational, record‑keeping, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Ability to perform complex calculations, follow complicated experimental procedures, and work independently.
• Experience working with mice valued.
• Some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings may be required.

Ability to perform job functions in upright or seated positions; ability to walk, climb step stools, work in temperature extremes, confined spaces, bend and twist at waist, use both hands and arms, perform repetitive motions, lift materials up to 40 lbs, and handle equipment up to 50 lbs. Rotating shifts, overtime, and learning new processes may be required.

Hourly wage: $37,200 to $48,300 annually (pay grade University‑GEN
06). Scheduled weekly hours: 40. Position start date:
May 1–September 1, 2026.
