Schedule

Monday through Thursday 06:00 – 14:30 hours.

Primary Function/General Purpose

The Protective Services Officer provides internal and external safety/security functions to support the general safety of BSMH facilities, including participation in investigations and detentions when warranted. Officers are assigned to an area and respond to radio and/or telephone calls for routine and emergency assistance.

Essential Job Functions
  • Protect patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environmental care safety hazards.
  • Deter criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property, including parking lots and decks.
  • Enforce policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco‑free/smoking policy.
  • Monitor hospital activity on closed‑circuit television to be alerted to any escalating situations that may require protective services involvement.
  • Intervene in patient, visitor, or staff confrontations when appropriate.
  • Document all duties performed, including completion of daily activity logs and incident reports.
  • Demonstrate understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation and internal and external disaster plans.
  • Respond to emergency situations and hospital alarms as designated.
  • Complete mandatory education and training to maintain organization‑ and department‑specific competencies and requirements, including applicable certification and licensure.
  • Remain on assigned post and complete all post‑specific duties.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures with special attention to attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, display of  and safety.
  • Maintain a professional appearance at all times while on duty.
  • Maintain proficiency and standards with all issued equipment.
Licensing/Certification
  • Valid driver's license (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire)
Education

High school diploma or GED (required)

Vocational/Technical degree (preferred)

Work Experience

1‑2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)

Training

Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Training (required within 6 months of hire)

Physical Requirements

Requires regular lifting and carrying up to 100 lbs, pushing or pulling equipment, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, and bending. Shift work, manual dexterity, and the ability to heed alarms and other audio signals are essential.

Working Conditions

Work may involve high noise levels, bright lights, physical altercations, verbal abuse, limited hazardous substances or body fluids, and adverse weather conditions. Occasional off‑site travel and the use of restraints may be required.

Skills Hard/Technical/Clinical Skills
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word.
  • Use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (batons, handcuffs, body‑worn cameras, soft restraints) in compliance with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software, with the ability to document incidents accurately and coordinate with clinical teams and law enforcement.
Soft/Interpersonal Skills
  • Effective communication, active listening, empathy, conflict resolution.
