Charleston County Fleet Operations has immediate openings for Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Heavy Equipment Mechanics will maintain and repair the County’s heavy equipment such as back‑hoes, loaders, motor graders, bulldozers, dump trucks, roll‑off trucks, light to heavy‑duty trailers and ambulances.
Hourly RatesHEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I – $19.34‑$25.32 (TECH/04)
HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II – $26.11‑$34.19 (PROF/01)
HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC III – $29.25‑$38.31 (PROF/01)
HEAVY EQUIPMENT FIELD MECHANIC – $29.25‑$38.31 (PROF/02)

Heavy Equipment Mechanics receive an annual tool allowance.
Responsibilities- Perform a wide range of repair and maintenance procedures on County vehicles, including medium and heavy‑duty trucks, vans, and ambulances, in a field environment.
- Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic components and accessories on all types of equipment; execute complex service tasks such as heating and air system repairs, brake and frame maintenance, suspension, tires, and related components.
- Document identified problems and conduct basic mechanical diagnoses; repair or replace defective parts.
- Consult with vehicle operators to identify problems, explain required work, and prioritize repairs to minimize disruption.
- Inspect, test, and repair vehicle electrical charging systems such as alternators, regulators, and batteries.
- Maintain records on maintenance activities.
- Provide on‑call back‑up support for after‑hours repairs on EMS ambulances.
- Keep immediate supervisor informed regarding work progress.
- Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and review publications and audiovisual materials to stay current on industry principles, practices, and developments.
- Perform additional duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
- High school diploma (or GED) with a year or more of in‑depth repair and maintenance experience on heavy equipment, heavy‑duty truck systems, or related mechanical work.
- Manufacturer’s certification of past training is desired.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and ability to obtain a Class C Commercial Driver’s License within six months of employment.
- Must obtain an ASE or manufacturer’s certification within twelve months of hire date if not already possessed.
- Proficient with diagnostic equipment; must be comfortable using a digital multimeter and reading wiring diagrams.
- May be required to make road calls, operate repaired equipment, and be on call 24/7 for critical repairs.
- Capable of performing full‑range major and minor mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and fuel system repairs on heavy equipment, heavy‑duty trucks, trailers, and related systems.
