Shelter Assistants are responsible for providing services to clients in One
80 Place’s shelters. Shelter Assistants maintain a safe, housing-focused, trauma‑informed environment as they support individuals experiencing homelessness to move to permanent housing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Intake Process and Acuity Confirmation
  • Completes an initial needs assessment and acts upon critical needs appropriately and immediately.
  • Orients clients to the shelter, programs and review shelter expectations, schedules, and goal of attaining permanent housing.
  • Identify clients who need assistance securing housing documents. Examples include birth certificates, social security cards, income information, etc.
  • Recordkeeping and Reporting
  • Document pertinent client information. This includes client conversations, issues/concerns, progress towards housing goals and incidents.
  • Report critical incidents immediately to the Shelter Manager. Critical incidents include exposure to environmental hazards, death, violence etc.
  • Collects all required data necessary for funding and statistical reports.
  • Completes bed assignments in HMIS.
  • Completes shelter exit forms.
  • Report all facility maintenance, IT and alarm issues appropriately and timely.
  • Report all needs for cleaning, laundry, meal preparation and effective operations to Operation Staff on duty and assist in other areas as needed to ensure seamless operations.
  • Property Management
  • Assures the safety of all One
    80 Place properties through frequent walk‑throughs inspecting for any potential hazards, risks, or unsafe conditions.
  • Reports any hazards to the Shelter Manager or Shelter Director.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Works in collaboration with shelter and all other One
    80 Place staff to facilitate a team environment.
  • Participates in One
    80 Place trainings and committees as requested.
  • Actively participates in monthly staff and team meetings and commits to group decisions.
  • Role models effective team behavior.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in building relationships with all One
    80 Place employees, volunteers, vendors, Board of Directors, and clients.
  • Report to the assigned shift on time, well‑groomed, and in uniform.
  • Substitutes for other staff when the need arises.
  • Shelter Assistant Duties
  • Invites clients with case management appointments to remain at the shelter.
  • Conduct housing stability groups and encourage shelter clients to attend.
  • Actively engage clients in conversations about goals, goal planning, and needs.
  • Assist with accomplishing specific tasks related to case plans.
  • Maintain all shelter schedules.
  • Prepare clients for meals and support kitchen staff in the dining areas.
  • Communicate all pertinent information to other staff as needed.
  • Assist community members on the phone and in person with various needs.
  • Distribute mail as necessary.
  • Provide medication to the appropriate clients when requested.
  • Respond to any incidents to ensure support and safety for staff and clients.
  • Provides Homeless Connection Line assistance when necessary to prioritize those with a housing crisis.
  • Engage clients with maintaining their personal areas to ensure cleanliness and organization.
  • Performs other relevant duties assigned by supervisor or other One
    80 Place management staff.

    Requirements Specific Requirements
  • High School Diploma.
  • Two year’s experience working with those experiencing homelessness or a similar population.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict and crisis in a calm manner to bring about a positive resolution.
  • Able and willing to work rotating shifts (i.e., overnight, day and evening) as well as holidays, weekends.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Physical, Environmental and Sensory Demands
  • Requires the ability to solve problems, make decisions, and listen.
  • Requires the ability to deal calmly in crisis situations.
  • Requires the ability to relate effectively to individuals experiencing homelessness and always maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Requires corrective vision and hearing to normal range; ability to move between service locations; sit and/or stand for long periods of time; ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Use of phones, computers, time clocks, security cameras, radios and general office machinery.
