- The License Examiner II administers road test examinations for the following class vehicles:
- Class A:
Any combination of vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GWR) of 26,001 pounds provided the GWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. - Class B:
Any single unit vehicle with a GWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such towing vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds. - Class C:
Any single unit vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not meet the definition of A or B, but that is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver or is placarded for hazardous materials. - Class D:
Passenger vehicles and all non‑commercial vehicles that do not exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. - Class E:
Non‑commercial single unit vehicles and all non‑commercial vehicles that do not exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. - Class F:
Non‑commercial combination vehicles that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. - Class M:
Motorcycles. - Class CDL: CDL vehicles in a CDL Office.
- Class A:
- Determines applicant’s physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles, administering written, oral and automated examinations to assess knowledge of laws and driving procedures.
- Performs pre‑trip inspections of the applicant’s vehicle.
- Examines, accepts, prepares, enters, and prints all documents required for issuing driver licenses, beginner permits, identification cards, vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, and titles; processes requests for repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles; and performs edits to customer name and address fields.
- Answers customer inquiries pertaining to driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements by phone and in person.
- Greets and directs customers to appropriate areas in the office.
- Collects all required fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund, reconciles daily reports, calculates vehicle sales taxes, and adjusts vehicle weight records.
- Receives, codes, and issues receipts for surrendered license plates; boxes surrendered plates and completes pick‑up requests.
- Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
- Faxes, mails documents, and runs errands for the branch office (including trips to the post office and bank deposits).
Road tests are conducted throughout the year in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, wind, summer heat and cold winter days. Testing begins early in the morning and continues into the early evening.
Minimum and Additional Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and at least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
- Nationwide criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
- Completion of a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination for CDL knowledge and skill tests.
- Professional and effective communication with internal and external customers; excellent customer service skills.
- Thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements and application of DMV organizational competencies.
- Ability to work in a climate‑controlled office setting and outdoors, often exposed to warm or cold temperatures and processing chemicals.
- May be required to relocate to an office within 30 miles of current residence if business needs arise.
