Job Responsibilities

Supervises a crew of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance workers Involved in a variety of maintenance activities to maintain and preserve state maintained roads and bridges. This work Includes, but not limited to cleaning ditches, installing driveways, repairing pipes, cleaning/repairing drainage structures and repairing/Installing sidewalks. Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly reports, time sheets, and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures;

rates employees yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System. Functions as a working supervisor. Completes job hazard analysis forms, mitigates risks, and conducts safety meeting prior to the commencement of work activities to inform the crew of the hazards associated with the work to be performed. Performs inspections of the roads on the state highway system looking for deficiencies, entering them into the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS).

Plans and schedules routine and preventive maintenance activities. Ensure employees within the crew(s) complete all COL pre-trip inspections prior to operating COL vehicles. Conducts training for employees. Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy duty equipment such as a Backhoe, Cement Spreader, Distributor Truck, Dozer, Crawler, Excavator, Front End Loader, Lowboy Truck Tractor, Motor Grader, Road Patcher, Truck Mounted, Slope Mower, Sweeper Truck and Tractor with Ditcher.

Performs or assists in all additional requests or tasks assigned by direct supervisor(s) within the State of Chain of Command. This include, but is not limited to, Hurricane/Snow and Ice Plans, Customer Services, On-Call, Traffic Control, Spill Response and Emergency Work or Support. Assist in meeting and units Annual Business Plan goals. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement:
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Must be able to exert up to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Works 40 hours per week under normal conditions. Works outside in heavy traffic and all weather conditions. Subject to dust, excessive noise and traffic hazards for a period of time. Requires lifting, standing, stooping, bending and physical strain. Work overtime as necessary.
