Job Title: Accounting Technician I
Division: Administrative Services
Headquarters: Guthrie Agricultural Center, Charleston, WV
Reports To: Comptroller/Assistant Director Administrative Services
Supervisory Responsibility: None
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Nature of WorkUnder direct supervision, the Accounting Technician I performs entry-level, technical accounting support duties.
Examples of Work- Serves as department Fleet Coordinator and ensures compliance with Fleet Management Division rules.
- Maintains department’s fixed asset records.
- Performs basic accounts payable functions, including invoice audit, data entry, filing paid items, and/or vendor table maintenance.
- Reviews financial transactions for completeness and accuracy.
- Analyzes and audits invoices, bills, orders, forms, reports, and documents for accuracy and initiates correction of errors.
- Identifies and corrects routine posting errors.
- Performs basic calculations to determine interest, discounts, deductions, and/or other like amounts.
- Performs account reconciliations.
- Prepares a variety of financial reports and basic information reports.
- May use Purchasing Card to make purchases and reconcile statements according to policy.
- May prepare bank deposits.
- May perform or assist with basic accounts receivable functions, including posting payments, statement preparation, and applying late fees.
- As proficiency in areas of assignment is developed, more complex duties will be assigned with diminished oversight or direction.
- Other duties as assigned.
Office environment, sitting, stooping, bending, walking, stretching/reaching, keyboarding, manual dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift over 20 pounds. Some travel required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge of the operation of office equipment such as a copier, fax machine, and personal computer.
- Ability to detect and correct mathematical errors or refer to the proper person for correction.
- Ability to develop and apply specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to function proficiently.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One year of relevant full-time experience. Familiarity with accounting software or processes preferred. Prior governmental experience preferred.

- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
- Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
