Job Summary
Under direct supervision, the Accounting Technician I performs entry‑level, technical accounting support duties for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
Responsibilities- Serve as department Fleet Coordinator and ensure compliance with Fleet Management Division rules.
- Maintain department’s fixed asset records.
- Perform basic accounts payable functions: invoice audit, data entry, filing paid items, vendor table maintenance.
- Review financial transactions for completeness and accuracy.
- Analyze and audit invoices, bills, orders, forms, reports, and documents for accuracy and initiate correction of errors.
- Identify and correct routine posting errors.
- Perform basic calculations to determine interest, discounts, deductions, and other amounts.
- Perform account reconciliations.
- Prepare a variety of financial reports and basic information reports.
- Use Purchasing Card to make purchases and reconcile statements according to policy.
- Prepare bank deposits.
- Assist with basic accounts receivable functions including posting payments, statement preparation, and applying late fees.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Office environment, including sitting, stooping, bending, walking, stretching/reaching, keyboarding, manual dexterity, visual acuity, and ability to lift over 20 pounds. Some travel required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge of the operation of office equipment such as a copier, fax machine, and PC.
- Ability to detect and correct mathematical errors or refer to the proper person for correction.
- Ability to develop and apply specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to function proficiently.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
High School diploma or equivalent.
One year of relevant full‑time experience. Familiarity with accounting software or processes preferred. Prior governmental experience preferred.
Additional Requirements- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Satisfactory completion of pre‑employment drug testing.
- Satisfactory completion of pre‑employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
- Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
