Under close supervision, at the entry level, examines tax returns and other related materials for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with statutory rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the lawful completion of returns. The chosen candidate will obtain a general knowledge of state and federal tax laws and regulations and the ability to use independent judgment to apply that to audit selection.
Correspond with field personnel, taxpayers, and their representatives by written communication, email, fax, phone, or by other methods. Provide taxpayer assistance and education in the completion of applicable forms and other documents. Utilize the integrated tax system (Gen Tax) to generate audit selections; notify taxpayers of selection process; obtain proper documentation required to complete the audit process; and ensure the documentation is completely and correctly completed.
Process audits by performing a technical review of the working documentation before submission for completion. Monitor audit cases and generate the required letters to properly notify taxpayers of audit selection. Generate and maintain reports on the audit processes and some audit results. Generate reports for outside agencies as directed by Auditing Division administration. Answer incoming calls from taxpayers and field-based staff.
Record and maintain itinerary changes for field-based staff. Research potential audit candidates from auditor recommendations. Prepare audits for mailing using a certified mail system and publish audit results to the correct taxpayer account in Gen Tax. May review and test existing and new functionality in the Gen Tax system and identify and report problems or issues. Maintain instructional materials and manuals.
May communicate with other agencies, accountants, attorneys, and corporate and government officials. The incumbent will be required to follow strict confidentiality rules with respect to taxpayer information. Performs related work as required.
Employment requires a fingerprint-based criminal-background check to be provided at the West Virginia Tax Division’s expense. Failing to initiate the process or cooperate with this process, providing false or incomplete information, or discovery of disqualifying information will result in denial of, or dismissal from, employment or denial of transfer irrespective of when discovered. The chosen applicant will also be subject to a tax compliance check.
Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.

Substitution: High school diploma or equivalent ANDtwo (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division, or two (2) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support for the required training.
