Highlights- The selected applicant will train to become a Drilling Operator and act as a backup to drillers, while providing general support with geotechnical drilling to facilitate site sampling, analysis, and investigation.
- Perform a variety of tasks such as inspecting and maintaining drilling equipment and vehicles, logging and packaging samples, gathering appropriate sampling tools, etc.
- May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather.
- A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver s License is required.
- Operates a hydraulic crane.
- Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
- Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
- Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.
- Assists the Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
- Adds rods or augers to drill.
- Removes core samples from the core barrel.
- Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
- Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.
- Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.
- Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
- Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, bridge structures, etc.
- Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
- Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
- Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
