Half-Time Instructional/Supervisory/Transportation/Special Education Aide

Job Summary

Assist teachers and students with daily classroom activities and school travel. Maintain a non‑drugged, alcohol‑free workplace. Model responsible citizenship and ethical principles. Conduct learning games, assist with planning and preparation of instructional materials, provide individualized instruction, maintain records, supervise students in various school areas, and participate in bus and hall monitoring. Administer medications and complete required training for special education aides.

Responsibilities
  • Performs duties as outlined by the classroom teacher.
  • Special Education Aides will be required to complete the Braxton County Schools Medication Administration Training and administer medications as appropriate.
  • Assist in lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing diapers or clothing of special‑needs students.
  • Assist teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
  • Conduct learning games with students according to established procedures.
  • Assist with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards.
  • Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to reinforce skills taught by the teacher.
  • Assist in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and the abilities of students.
  • Keep files of the children’s work, test scores, health services, etc.
  • Prepare routine notices concerning activities, meetings, etc.
  • Conduct activities for students with directions firmly established by the teacher.
  • Monitor testing and classroom tasks assigned to students.
  • Correct activities assigned to students.
  • Operate audiovisual equipment during instructional duties.
  • Secure materials for instructional programs through proper channels.
  • Prepare material for instruction as outlined by the classroom teacher.
  • Available for consultations with parents.
  • Comply with in‑service training required by Braxton County Schools.
  • Assist the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus.
  • Participate in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty.
  • Keep records as needed to accomplish evaluation for programs and ensure all information on students is current and available for review at all times.
  • Keep a skill mastery list on each student up to date in cooperation with the classroom teacher where required.
  • Ride buses with students as assigned and assist in maintaining discipline on the bus.
  • Assist students in boarding and disembarking from buses.
  • Secure students in seats with approved safety equipment for buses.
  • Provide care and supervision of students diagnosed with autism or other special education needs.
  • Maintain positive work habits.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform duties efficiently and productively.
  • Maintain and/or upgrade job‑related skills.
  • Always develop and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Instill in students the belief and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the principal or superintendent of schools.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A‑2‑5.
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A‑4‑8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18‑5‑15c.
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description.
Classification
  • Aide I – a person selected and trained for a teacher‑aide classification such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide.
  • Aide II – a service person referred to in the Aide I classification who has completed a training program approved by the state board, or who holds a high school diploma or has received a general educational development certificate. Only an Aide II may be employed in any special education program.
