Certification / Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5
- Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state‑approved competency test), as required. Only applicants who take and pass the state aid test may be considered for hire.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §§18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
- The ability to perform the job duties listed below.
- Valid West Virginia Department of Education certification as an aide, or an applicable early childhood classroom assistant teacher certificate (Aide I-IV, Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher I-III). Certificates must meet the requirements defined by the WVDE.
Personnel selected and trained for teacher‑aide classifications working in kindergarten programs (including pre‑kindergarten), first, second, or third grade classrooms, and meeting the early childhood classroom assistant teacher minimum requirements for permanent, temporary, or paraprofessional status. The employee must remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while in the workplace.
Performance Responsibilities- Provide individual or small group instruction under the supervision of the teacher.
- Participate in comprehensive training and implementation of key practices in literacy and numeracy driven by the Third Grade Success Act under teacher supervision (Grades 1‑3).
- Provide students with individualized attention.
- Assist in grading assignments and recording grades.
- Set up and operate equipment for instruction.
- Assist with preparing materials for instruction.
- Escort students to and from the bus.
- Assist with library duties for students.
- Prepare snacks for students as needed.
- Supervise special‑needs students in the regular classroom setting.
- Maintain inventory of classroom materials and supplies.
- Modify materials and instructional activities for special‑needs students in the regular classroom.
- Implement accommodations for special‑needs students in the regular classroom.
- Practice good safety habits.
- Perform clerical duties such as filing and data entry for classroom purposes.
- Be aware of medications administered to students.
- Maintain confidentiality of students' records.
- Ride bus when required.
- Plan and prioritize daily activities, anticipating job responsibilities.
- Operate the office efficiently in the absence of the supervisor(s).
- Complete tasks efficiently and accurately with minimal supervision.
- Instill ethical principles and democratic values in students.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
The job requires frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift or move 100 pounds of materials or children. Close vision for reading handwritten or typed material is required.
