Term of employment shall be 200 days each academic year (July 1 through June 30).

JOB DESCRIPTION

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1:

"Classroom teacher" means a professional educator who has a direct instructional or counseling relationship with students and who spends the majority of his or her time in that capacity.

The Science Teacher is a classroom teacher responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement and growth in science. The teacher develops and delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards, creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment, and supports students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The teacher may be assigned to teach science courses consistent with the employee's certification and the instructional needs of Pocahontas County Schools.

The Science Teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate with endorsement(s) in Science, including but not limited to General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, or other science endorsements appropriate to the assigned teaching duties.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration
  • Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration
  • Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Planning and Preparation
  • Demonstrating Knowledge:
    Demonstrates current and thorough knowledge of assigned content, curriculum, instructional best practices, and applicable state standards. Understands how students learn and develops instruction appropriate to various developmental levels.
  • Designing Instruction:
    Develops and implements engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, student engagement, and the application of learning. Selects appropriate instructional resources, technology, and learning experiences to support student achievement.
  • Assessing Student Learning:
    Designs and implements formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives. Uses assessment data to monitor progress, provide feedback, and inform instructional decisions.
  • Understanding Students:
    Demonstrates knowledge of students' individual strengths, interests, learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and academic needs to provide differentiated instruction and appropriate accommodations or modifications.
Classroom Environment
  • Creating a Respectful Culture:
    Establishes positive relationships with students and creates a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to academic success and scientific exploration.
  • Managing Student Behavior:
    Maintains clear expectations and procedures that promote responsible behavior, student engagement, and a productive learning environment.
  • Organizing the Learning Environment:
    Maintains an organized classroom environment that supports learning, ensures accessibility of materials, and complies with all safety regulations and procedures.

    Implements and enforces appropriate safety procedures consistent with district, state, and federal guidelines.
