Reports To:

Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Support Services

FLSA Status:
Exempt

Employment Term:
Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code 18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by KCSBOE.

Salary:
Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.

Evaluation:
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and KCS G48A.

Qualifications:

  • Valid West Virginia teaching certificate.
  • Proper endorsements as required.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience preferred.

Support Relationships:
Works cooperatively with school personnel to provide coordinated countywide special education services for area of exceptionality.

Job Goal:
Provide leadership and coordination of services to provide a comprehensive quality program for students of specific area of exceptionality.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Complete activities of itinerant teacher for caseload of specific area of exceptionality.
  • Review medical and educational reports for eligibility determination for area of exceptionality.
  • Attend all initial eligibility meetings for students of specific area of exceptionality.
  • Assign caseloads to itinerant teachers in area of exceptionality.
  • Assist Director of Special Education on recruiting teachers and support staff to fill vacant positions of area of exceptionality.
  • Mentor all newly hired itinerant teachers in area of exceptionality.
  • Serve as liaison between Office of Exceptional Students (OES) and itinerant staff in area of exceptionality.
  • Serve as liaison between Kanawha County Schools outside agencies and the general public for area of exceptionality.
  • Foster climate of cooperation among staff members involved with students of area of exceptionality.
  • Assist in supervising itinerant professional and support staff in area of exceptionality.
  • Consult with building principals concerning program and personnel needs and concerns.
  • Assist in monitoring folders of all students within area of exceptionality to ensure compliance with county, state, and federal policies.
  • Provide training relative to area of exceptionality to professional and support personnel.
  • Assist in preparing staff development activities for countywide in services.
  • Make recommendations for ordering and providing maintenance of equipment specific to area of exceptionality.
  • Attend OES staff meetings.
  • Support Kanawha County Schools' policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education of Kanawha County Schools.
