This position is classified exempt and will be assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management, Office of Environmental Enforcement (EE). Under limited/direct supervision, the employee will work in a training inspector capacity or as a full performance inspector (depending upon experience) performing technical and field inspection duties related to solid waste management and water pollution control programs.

Duties- Makes regular inspections of sites and facilities to determine compliance with laws, rules, regulations, and permit conditions.
- Investigates complaints related to suspected environmental harm from regulated or non-regulated sources.
- Initiates criminal prosecution, utilizes administrative procedures, or takes other legal action to enforce compliance with established regulations.
- Responsible for initiating and following up on enforcement actions and collecting soil, water, waste, and effluent samples for laboratory analysis.
- Responds to emergency situations, such as spills, truck wrecks, and hazardous substance discharges, in accordance with procedures. May be subject to emergency response, on‑call duty, and temporary assignment to different geographical areas of the state as necessitated by environmental conditions and/or agency needs.
- Submits written and electronic inspection reports and other required data.
- May be required to attend public meetings and provide technical assistance to program staff.
- May perform other related duties as assigned regarding water pollution control and solid waste management.
- Must reside within a reasonable driving distance of the office.
- Must be eligible to obtain a motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally.
- Must be able to walk long distances in adverse weather over rugged terrain and lift and carry equipment for considerable distances.
- Must take and pass a physical examination within the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow‑up examinations. Failure to pass the initial examination will result in termination of employment. Failure to pass the annual examination may result in reassignment of duties.
- This position has responsibilities across multiple counties, which may require significant overnight travel.
- The geographic area of assignment for this position is subject to future changes.
- Regular attendance is an essential requirement of this position.
- Qualifying applicants will be required to complete an internet‑based profile assessment to evaluate thinking and reasoning skills, behavioral traits, and occupational interests in comparison to those identified as important for this position.
- The recommended candidate will be subject to a search of his or her Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) prior to being hired and annually thereafter.
- Any applicant who has never taken and passed the written examination for the Environmental Inspector in Training position may be required to do so.

If an applicant does not test within that time frame, the application will be inactivated. Re‑tests will replace earlier scores and the score is valid for twelve (12) months after taking the test.
