Overview
Nature of Work NR26-03. Classified Position/Classified-Exempt Position. Parks and Recreation/Watoga State Park. Employee in this position will serve as the Assistant Superintendent at Watoga State Park. Employee is guided by statements of policy and outlined assignments from the Park Superintendent to help ensure business-like, efficient, and responsible management and is required to exercise discretionary judgment and initiative in areas including equipment maintenance, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, sanitation, public relations, law enforcement, personnel management/training, accounting, recordkeeping, revenue production, budget preparation/control, and related matters.
The employee may be assigned to off-facility responsibilities or special assignments, including technical research projects, special events, supervision of other facilities, statewide temporary managerial assignments, forest fire fighting, and law enforcement duties. The employee may handle and resolve guest complaints and must communicate clearly in both written and oral form. Training and management of personnel may be required. SNRPO training and certification may be required if not already possessed.
The employee will interact with and supervise operation, maintenance, and protection of Watoga State Park facilities and related properties, including Calvin Price State Forest, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, Beartown State Park, and Greenbrier River Trail, and may oversee related facilities on a regional basis. On-site housing valued at $1,000 per month is provided. Regular attendance is required.
The Agency reserves the right to permanently transfer the employee holding this position to another position of equal classification and pay grade within the Parks and Recreation Section based on the business needs of the Agency.
Responsibilities- Assist in management of park facilities and operations across Watoga State Park and related properties.
- Coordinate equipment, grounds, housekeeping, sanitation, public relations, law enforcement, personnel management/training, accounting, recordkeeping, and budget activities.
- Perform and inspect completed work; supervise and train personnel; resolve guest complaints; prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Participate in or oversee special projects, temporary assignments, and potential off-site duties.
- Possess or attain Special Natural Resources Police Officer (SNRPO) certification if applicable.
Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Additional experience may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one year of full-time or equivalent per 30 semester hours. - Experience:
Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a state park, natural resources field, tourism/travel industry, or environmental industry, with two (2) years in a responsible administrative and/or supervisory capacity. - Special Requirement:
Valid driver’s license; must obtain West Virginia driver’s license within six months. May require SNRPO training and pistol requirements, periodic firearms qualification, physical, psychological, and polygraph examinations as applicable.
- On-site housing is provided at $1,000 per month.
- Probationary period per SPB 2851 (effective 06/27/2019).
