Nature of Work
At the advanced level, performs complex professional and supervisory forestry work in a regional specialty area, developing, implementing, and administering programs to promote and support urban forestry objectives within municipalities. These include U.S. Forest Service Grant, Tree City USA, Demonstration City Grants, Chesapeake Bay Grants, Mountaineer Treeways, Project Communi Tree, The Municipal Tree Restoration Program, and other initiatives.
Responsibilities- Develop applications, evaluate technical proposals, process grant payments, and provide technical assistance for projects; attend meetings and events.
- Prepare program narratives, budgets, performance reports, fiscal reports, and supplemental grant proposals while ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
- Develop and implement strategies to address issues identified in the WV State Forest Action Plan as required by the U.S. Forest Service to receive federal funding.
- Lead the Technical Specialist and Partnership Coordinator; supervise and direct the Urban Forester and Partnership Coordinator.
- Provide technical assistance to communities and organizations involved with public tree care; represent the Division of Forestry at the Northeast‑Midwest State Foresters Alliance.
- Responsible for award of sub‑grant funds to communities and project approval; manage urban forestry budget; hire urban forestry staff; recommend statewide strategy concerning the WV State Forest Action Plan; provide input into regional and national urban forestry program standards.
- Associate degree in a Forest Technology program recognized by the Society of American Foresters

* * a Bachelor's degree in a forestry program accredited by the Society of American Foresters. - Four years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in the field of forestry.
- Must have a current license as a registered professional forester or a registered forestry technician, or be in the process of obtaining professional licensure.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must pass a physical examination within the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow‑up examinations.
- Positions must meet qualifications for and become a Special Natural Resources Police Officer at the earliest opportunity following employment and maintain this commission throughout the period of employment. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the State Forester.
