Under general supervision, the Correctional Counselor 1 will function as a member of a team providing services to an assigned caseload of inmates within the facility. The work of the Correctional Counselor 1 will consist of providing a variety of services to the inmate population. Duties may vary as to job function or area of specialization based on the program being administered.
Areas of responsibilities may include assisting the nit Correctional Officer with security duties, providing vocational education, substance abuse education, assisting with recreational services, providing crisis intervention on the unit, guidance of inmates, assistance with need and/or risk assessments, classification, and diagnostic evaluations. Will perform other duties as assigned.

The minimum qualifications for this job title are:
Training: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in criminal justice, corrections, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling and guidance, criminology, social work, education, therapeutic recreation or closely related field. OR Substitution:
Experience in the area of corrections or related fields may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis. How do you qualify for this position?
- I have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in criminal justice, corrections, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling and guidance, criminology, social work, education, therapeutic recreation or closely related field. Please note that the following degrees are not considered qualifying: political science, history, and religion (unless the major specifically mentions education or counseling.)
- I have four (4) years of experience in the area of corrections or related fields. Examples of qualifying experience include but are not limited to: correctional counseling, mental health counseling, rehabilitation counselor, correctional officer, social worker, CPS worker, behavioral health aide/technician, career counselor.
- I have a combination of college hours and experience in the area of corrections or related fields that equals four (4) years total.
- I do not meet any of the above training and experience requirements. Please do not apply.

- No, I do not have any previous corrections counseling experience.
- Yes, I have less than two (2) years of previous corrections counseling experience.
- Yes, I have two (2) or more years of corrections counseling experience.
