The Criminal Investigation Division of the West Virginia Tax Division is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Tax Audit Clerk. Under general supervision, this position will provide critical support to the section by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources to produce reports and other documentation and by entering tax information related to CID operations into Gen Tax.
Examples of work include but are not limited to:
- Examine tax returns and other documents for completeness, accuracy and compliance with state tax laws and/or related federal tax laws.
- Gathers, analyzes, and interprets data from various sources such as databases, reports, and surveillance to provide insights that support decision-making in the investigation of civil and criminal violations of tax law, law enforcement purposes, or enforcement strategy.
- Assess potential problems, identify patterns, and produce reports to inform actions and mitigate risks.
- Draft detailed reports and briefings for stakeholders, summarizing findings and providing recommendations, for review and approval by management. May provide recommendations on case and enforcement strategy.
- Utilize state resources to determine if a business is licensed and is operating legally under applicable tax laws, and to determine taxability of income, services or products in accordance with the applicable rates and qualified tax exemptions.
- Work with other analysts and investigators to share information and coordinate efforts. Conduct desk exams and investigations to analyze criminal activity, crime patterns, threat assessment, and trends to assist in investigations.
- Draft correspondence on complex and sensitive tax issues to obtain additional information from or to relay information to and from investigative team.
- Assist in the development of tax forms, instructions, and other publications.
- Work as assigned by CID Management; assistance to Financial Analyst and Support Analyst as needed.
Performs related work as required. Employment requires a fingerprint-based criminal-background check to be provided at the West Virginia Tax Division’s expense. Failing to initiate the process or cooperate with this process, providing false or incomplete information, or discovery of disqualifying information will result in denial of, or dismissal from, employment or denial of transfer irrespective of when discovered. The chosen applicant will also be subject to a tax compliance check.
Training:Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
OR
Substitution:Two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division OR two (2) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support may be substituted for the required training.
AND
Experience:Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent paid part-time experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support, OR two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division.
