Nature of Work
This position works under limited supervision, performing professional nursing services at an advanced level, including direct nursing care, administrative review, and program direction. It provides comprehensive services to individuals or groups in a variety of structured or unstructured health‑care settings, including prevention, rehabilitation, counseling, education, and care of acute and long‑term illnesses. Some nursing interventions may be unpredictable in outcome, requiring frequent reassessment and adaptation of techniques.
The role may involve specialized direct care for patients with complex health problems, emphasizing continued care. Nurses work inter‑dependently with other health professionals and may serve as a charge nurse of a local health department nursing service or as a head nurse with 24‑hour responsibility for a single unit of nursing service and/or supervision of multiple units. Shift work and travel may be required, and related work as needed will be performed.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited four‑year college or university plus two years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience as a registered professional nurse (RPN).
- Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university or a diploma nursing program plus three years of experience as a RPN.
- Professional certification from a recognized national nursing certifying organization as a nurse or nurse practitioner plus two years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience as a RPN.
- Associate degree in nursing plus a bachelor’s degree in the health sciences or behavioral sciences plus two years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in nursing.
- Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited four‑year college or university.
- Current West Virginia license or temporary permit to practice as a registered professional nurse.
