Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) – Inpatient Psychiatry Medical Services
Med Cap Health is seeking a compassionate, experienced Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to provide comprehensive medical care for patients admitted to an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Working collaboratively with psychiatry, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams, the APP will serve as the primary medical provider for adult psychiatric patients, addressing acute and chronic medical conditions while supporting safe psychiatric treatment.
This role is ideal for an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) who is comfortable practicing independently, has experience caring for behavioral health patients, and enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced inpatient environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions during hospitalization.
- Provide medical clearance and ongoing medical management for patients admitted to the psychiatric unit.
- Monitor patients for medical complications related to psychiatric illness and psychotropic medications.
- Collaborate closely with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, pharmacists, and case management.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
- Educate patients and staff regarding medical conditions, disease prevention, and wellness.
Qualifications
Required
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state of practice.
- Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain).
- Board Certification (AANP, ANCC, NCCPA, or equivalent).
- Current BLS certification (ACLS preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of Advanced Practice Provider experience.
- Experience caring for patients with behavioral health or psychiatric conditions.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and medical management skills.
- Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration abilities.
Preferred
- Previous experience in an inpatient psychiatric hospital.
- Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Behavioral Health experience.
- Experience managing medically complex adult patients.
- Familiarity with psychotropic medications and their medical side effects.
- Experience using electronic health records (EHR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to independently assess and manage complex medical conditions.
- Knowledge of common psychiatric diagnoses and the medical issues associated with serious mental illness.
- Ability to recognize medical emergencies requiring escalation of care.
- Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
