Exempt

Employment Term:
Minimum 200 days annually.

Salary:
Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Nurses Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.

Evaluation:
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and KCS G48A.

Job Summary

The Title I Family Support Worker collaborates with school staff, families, community agencies, and local organizations to improve student attendance, engagement, and overall success. This position works closely with administrators, counselors, teachers, and attendance personnel to identify and support students experiencing attendance challenges through home visits, family outreach, and coordination of community resources. The Family Support Worker helps identify barriers to attendance, develops action plans with families and school teams, facilitates family and community engagement activities, and builds partnerships that strengthen connections between home, school, and community.

Responsibilities also include monitoring and documenting program effectiveness, maintaining accurate records, supporting initiatives that improve attendance and reduce disciplinary concerns, and participating in ongoing professional development. The ideal candidate possesses strong communication and organizational skills, knowledge of community resources and family engagement practices, and a commitment to supporting students and families through collaborative, solution-focused approaches.

General Performance Requirements and Responsibilities

An employee working for Kanawha County Schools is expected to comply with all the Kanawha County Schools Policies and Procedures, including maintaining regular attendance and completing all required training. Employees are required to follow all safety rules to maintain a safe workplace.

Job Duties:

  • Work in collaboration with the school administration, assistant attendance director, counseling staff, nurse, psychologist, specialists, and instructional staff to identify students with attendance concerns.
  • Improve student attendance through working with assistant attendance directors, teachers, counselors, and administration through home visits, regular, documented contacts with student and families, and by acting as a broker to obtain the services needed by these individuals to improve student attendance.
  • Work with teachers to establish relationships with community and business leaders to become mentors and tutors to students to improve student attendance.
  • Identify areas where families tend to gather within the community and work with these environments to foster linkages with the school.
  • Be responsible for collaborating with school personnel to design family and community involvement activities within the schools or within areas that the schools serve (satellite areas) and for working with community members to increase family and community attendance and involvement at those meetings.
  • Identify barriers to school attendance through surveying parents, students and community members and analyzing survey results and develop plans to enhance partnerships with families.
  • Develop an action plan in collaboration with school staff, students, families and community representatives based on the results of the survey to identify and resolve barriers to student attendance.
  • Collaborate with administration on incorporating the formed action plan within the Five Year Strategic Plan.
  • In collaboration with a school based team, review and incorporate possible incentives for increasing family and community participation and student attendance based on identified barriers.
  • Provide monthly data to demonstrate the effectiveness and the efforts and expected outcomes of action plans.
  • Be responsible for working with school based personnel and outside agencies to increase student attendance; decrease tardiness; decrease discipline referrals and infractions; increase family involvement activities; increase involvement with community members.
  • Maintain documentation and evidence of these activities through logs, sign-in sheets, etc. and be able to compare program success to beginning and end data points.
  • Incorporate a variety of strategies to insure on-going family and community involvement that insures sustainable student attendance.
  • Maintain professional competence through continuing education activities provided by Kanawha County Schools and / or self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, county policy and administrative regulations.
