Job Description
Drivers operate heavy‑day trucks with front, side, or rear‑end load‑lift attachments depending on the line of business and truck type. They transport material to disposal, transfer, or recycle facilities when trucks reach legal load capacity. Commercial Drivers provide pick‑up service of containers filled with waste or recyclable material, which may weigh over 1,000 pounds and require maneuvering to a pick‑up stage area.
They navigate high‑traffic, congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots, executing highly skilled backing maneuvers. Residential Drivers collect residential household waste or recyclable material, safely maneuvering vehicles within residential environments and similarly navigating congested roads and lots. Roll‑off Drivers prepare, load, and transport large mobile open‑top or compactor containers from customer locations, navigating driveways, alleyways, lots, and high‑traffic roads while often operating in tight overhead environments.
All driver types perform these tasks with essential backing skills.
- Operate vehicle in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA and DOT requirements, and all local, state and federal laws.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections and document checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
- Immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to the Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Route Manager.
- Work closely with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
- Notify the Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Notify the Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, or receptacles too heavy to service.
- Communicate customer requests to the Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris.
- Follow route assignments as directed and complete end‑of‑day documentation and check‑out processes.
- Perform all duties as scheduled by the Operations Manager or Dispatch and assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.

Required Qualifications
- At least 1 year operating a vehicle requiring a CDL, or 1 year equivalent military driving within the last 7 years.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located.
- Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with an air‑brake endorsement (upon hire).
- Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with an air‑brake endorsement (upon hire).
