This role requires a hands‑on leader with strong technical expertise in arboriculture, proven people‑management skills, and the ability to coordinate complex land, infrastructure, and animal‑care operations in collaboration with other colleagues who have similar roles in other areas on the estate.

The Land Manager plays a critical role in maintaining the health, safety, and long‑term sustainability of the estates’ landscapes, woodlands, roadways, and supporting systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Land, Arboriculture & Infrastructure Management
    • Manage all aspects of arboriculture across both estates, including tree pruning, thinning, felling, veteran tree care, root protection zones (RPZs), and tree health programs.
    • Oversee woodland management, grasslands, meadow (sward) areas, and rainwater systems across the estates.
    • Direct roadway and track maintenance, ensuring safe, high‑quality access throughout the estates.
    • Manage green waste processing, including composting and mulch production for estate use.
    • Oversee drainage, groundwater, and coastal management, including swales, ghauts, erosion monitoring, and mitigation at the properties.
    • Ensure the upkeep of hard landscaping features, including stone walls, ruins, road edging, and estate structures.
    • Maintain perimeter fencing, including vegetation management around the fence and reporting of electrical issues.
  • Team Leadership & Operations
    • Provide direct line management to the Arboriculture Team, other land teams, and assigned project teams.
    • Collaborate closely with the Head Gardener and other colleagues on planning, prioritization, and execution of works.
    • Supervise, train, and support staff, ensuring safe work practices, equipment use, and secure storage.
    • Monitor staff leave, assist with recruitment, and administer disciplinary actions when required.
  • Animal Care Oversight
    • Manage the Herdsman and oversee daily pet care operations.
    • Arrange coverage during staff absences and emergencies.
    • Coordinate veterinary care, including appointments, follow‑ups, transportation, and medication management. Manage purchasing of pet‑related supplies.
    • Provide weekly pet‑care reports and regular updates via established communication channels.
  • Administration, Budgets & Reporting
    • Manage budgets, purchasing, and shipping for arboriculture, roadway maintenance, green waste processing, pet care, and other assigned accounts.
    • Prepare budget proposals and maintain detailed purchasing and account coding records.
    • Manage shipping logistics including documentation, coordination with carriers, compliance with procedures, and communication of regulatory changes.
    • Contribute to weekly horticulture and operations reports, including written updates and photographs.
Required Qualifications
  • Certified Arborist qualification (ISA or equivalent) required.
  • Proven experience in estate, land, or arboricultural management.
  • Strong knowledge of tree health, soil management, drainage systems, and land infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and complex operations.
  • Experience with budgeting, purchasing, and logistics management.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and respond to emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced arboriculture or land management certifications.
  • Experience working on large private estates or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of coastal land management and erosion mitigation.
