State & Local Tax (SALT) Staff Accountant
Location: Charlotte, NC
Work Modality: Hybrid (3 days per week in office)
Salary: $80,000 annual base + bonus opportunity
About the RoleConterra Networks is seeking a detail‑oriented State & Local Tax (SALT) Staff Accountant to support multi‑jurisdictional tax compliance for a growing telecommunications organization. In this role, you will ensure accurate and timely sales/use, franchise, regulatory, and property tax compliance while supporting audit readiness, tax documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration as the company expands its footprint.
Key Responsibilities- Track, validate, and maintain vendor exemption certificates to prevent incorrect tax charges.
- Partner with the Billing team to collect, review, and retain customer tax‑exempt and reseller certificates for accurate invoicing.
- Prepare and provide required reports and schedules to external consultants responsible for state and local tax filings (excluding income tax).
- Provide OPSTATS information and review USAC Form 499 for accuracy and completeness.
- Reconcile tax liability general ledger accounts monthly to support accurate financial close processes.
- Assist with nexus studies, state registrations, and compliance needs arising from new products and network expansion.
- Maintain tax calendars and ensure timely completion of all state and local filings.
- Support audits, notices, and information requests by gathering and organizing documentation.
- Monitor jurisdictional tax rate changes and ensure timely ERP updates for accurate use tax calculations.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Billing, Revenue, AP, and external advisors to ensure proper tax treatment.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting operations and ad hoc tax or accounting projects.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a compliance‑driven, multi‑state environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working with internal and external partners.
- Self‑motivated, team‑oriented, and collaborative.
- Professional demeanor with a strong customer‑service mindset.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- 2+ years of accounting or tax‑related experience preferred, with SALT exposure strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting multi‑jurisdictional or multi‑entity organizations preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and ERP system experience required.
- Telecommunications or regulated‑industry background is a plus.
