Position: Finance Manager (Business Unit Controller)

Job Title: Finance Manager (Business Unit Controller)

Location: Charlotte, NC (primary) with periodic travel to Canton, MS (1–2 times per month)

Pay: $170,000 – $180,000 base + 15% performance bonus (Direct Hire)

Pay (Interim): $70 – $90 / hour (Interim option available)

Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced Finance Manager to act as the primary financial leader for a major operational division. This individual will oversee all core accounting and finance functions, including project accounting, billing, forecasting, and financial reporting. The role requires close partnership with field operations teams and business leadership to improve financial performance, strengthen processes, and support strategic decision‑making. This position will initially focus on stabilizing finance operations and establishing strong controls and reporting discipline, with future growth potential within the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and ensure accurate reporting in accordance with GAAP
  • Oversee project‑based accounting activities, including revenue recognition across multiple contract types (T&M, unit price, fixed price, etc.)
  • Monitor job performance, cost tracking, and work‑in‑progress reporting to ensure accurate margin visibility
  • Partner with operations teams to validate project data, costs, and revenue assumptions
  • Manage billing operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing aligned with contract terms
  • Support collections efforts and help resolve billing disputes and payment delays
  • Track and analyze working capital metrics including DSO, AR aging, and cash flow performance
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and long‑range planning processes in collaboration with leadership
  • Provide financial insights, KPI reporting, and variance analysis to support business decisions
  • Serve as a financial partner to operations, supporting pricing, project execution, and profitability improvement initiatives
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with company policies and audit requirements
  • Identify process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and financial visibility
  • Oversee and develop a small finance team, including billing staff and future accounting hires
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, ideally in construction, utilities, infrastructure, or project‑based services
  • Strong background in contract and project accounting, including revenue recognition under GAAP
  • Experience with job costing, billing cycles, forecasting, and operational finance support
  • Proven ability to partner with field operations and influence business decisions
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and financial reporting skills
  • Experience improving working capital performance and cash flow metrics
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and reporting tools (Sage and Power BI preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross‑functionally in a hands‑on environment
Additional Details
  • Reports directly to VP of Finance
  • Oversees 2–3 direct reports with additional hiring planned (Cost Accountant role forthcoming)
  • Systems in use include Sage 300, Power BI, and Excel
  • Standard business hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
  • Role is currently open due to vacancy in leadership position
  • Both interim and direct hire options are available
