LHH is hiring a Sales & Use Tax Accountant to join our client in Charlotte, NC on a direct hire basis. This role focuses on preparing data for sales tax, use tax, and regulatory tax filings; reviewing invoice taxability; performing reconciliations; and managing exemption certificates. The ideal candidate is highly detail‑oriented, analytical, and able to work independently while coordinating with internal teams and third‑party tax partners.
Key Responsibilities- Compile, validate, and transmit sales tax data from billing and accounting systems to a third‑party tax preparer.
- Prepare revenue detail required for multi‑state sales tax filings.
- Review customer invoices to ensure proper tax application.
- Calculate use tax for purchases where sales tax was not charged.
- Assess AP invoices for correct tax treatment and determine where manual use tax must be accrued.
- Provide use‑tax reporting details to the external tax preparer.
- Prepare transaction‑level data needed for regulatory tax reporting.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of tax liability accounts.
- Identify discrepancies, research variances, and resolve missing or misapplied tax amounts.
- Maintain and update annual reseller or exemption certificates across a large vendor base.
- Review incoming vendor invoices to ensure taxes are not applied incorrectly.
- Manage documentation for vendors with multiple accounts and high transaction volume.
- 3+ years of sales & use tax experience is required
- Experience in regulated industries (telecom, utilities, energy, etc.) preferred.
- Strong understanding of sales tax, use tax, and exemption management processes.
- Ability to handle large transaction volumes with accuracy.
- Proficient in account reconciliations and variance analysis.
- Strong communication skills and comfort interacting with vendors and third‑party partners.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and maintain a high degree of accuracy.
- Prior experience coordinating data with external tax preparers.
- Experience reviewing invoice taxability for both AP and AR.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, formulas).
- Familiarity with ERP or billing systems.
- Hybrid schedule (3 days onsite / 2 remote).
- Highly detail‑focused team environment.
