Job Summary

This position will play a key role in the company’s corporate Accounting Policy Team within the Global Controller’s Group. The Accounting Policy Team is responsible for researching and documenting conclusions on proposed transactions, evaluating and implementing new accounting pronouncements, maintaining the global internal accounting policies as well as providing support to the corporate operational accounting teams. This role offers significant exposure to complex investment structures, cross-functional transaction activity, and senior stakeholders across Barings and its parent company.

One of the primary responsibilities for this role will include working with Barings investment teams by helping them understand the accounting outcomes for various fund structures, investment strategies and significant transactions. This role will also liaise with various Mass Mutual counterparts to present the proposed Barings deal and ensure that it is reviewed and approved by all stakeholders. The position will provide for significant visibility outside of the corporate accounting team.

The role will require application of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with opportunities to support projects involving other accounting frameworks, including U.K. GAAP, Australian GAAP and IFRS. The individual in this role will serve as a key contact for corporate investment accounting determinations. This individual will lead regular meetings across the organization and will be required to understand and reconcile different investment and accounting platforms.

The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, with a natural desire to learn. A successful individual will take ownership of the processes and look for efficiency improvements while understanding and adhering to existing internal controls. The ideal candidate will need to be exceptionally organized in order to manage multiple projects/deliverables with competing deadlines. The role will require reading/reviewing legal documents and applying the appropriate accounting guidance given the specific facts.

Analysis of complex legal investment structures will be a central daily task for this role. Verbal and written communication will be central to success. The position will report to the Director of Accounting Policy. The position will have regular interactions with all levels of the organization and reside in our corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead proposed transactions through parent company’s approval process, including coordination with internal stakeholders, scheduling presentations, and active management of timelines, follow-ups, and deliverables to keep reviews on track;
  • Document preliminary accounting treatment for new special purpose entities;
  • Initiate, monitor and document the consolidation triggering event process;
  • Provide regular communication on the status of monthly and quarterly consolidation changes to the Corporate Investment Team;
