Job SummaryMaterials & Supplies Accounting is within the Controller's Department and provides accounting, financial analysis, reporting, and control support for inventory and related materials and supplies activities across Duke Energy. The Accounting Analyst supports accurate and timely inventory accounting in accordance with GAAP, FERC requirements, company policy, and internal controls. This role is primarily responsible for preparing recurring accounting deliverables, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analyses, and supporting schedules.
The position reviews inventory data, researches routine differences, maintains documentation, and works with more experienced team members and business partners to resolve issues and meet monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting deadlines. The Accounting Analyst I performs routine assignments with guidance while developing knowledge of materials and supplies accounting, systems, and business processes. The Accounting Analyst II performs moderately complex assignments with greater independence, applies broader accounting knowledge, and may assist with issue resolution, analysis, and process improvement efforts.
- Prepare recurring materials and supplies accounting deliverables, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and variance analyses.
- Review inventory balances, transactions, adjustments, and operational data for completeness and reasonableness; research routine differences and coordinate corrections with guidance as needed.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities by completing assigned tasks accurately, maintaining appropriate support, and adhering to established deadlines.
- Assist with physical inventory and cycle count accounting activities, including organizing count support, reviewing results, preparing adjustments, and maintaining documentation.
- Assist with analysis and documentation related to excess, obsolete, slow-moving, damaged, or otherwise impaired materials and supplies.
- Prepare information and supporting documentation for internal and external audits, regulatory data requests, and management inquiries.
- Collaborate with Materials & Supplies Accounting teammates and business partners in Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, and other areas to gather information and resolve routine accounting matters.
- Use IBM Maximo, People Soft, Excel, and other reporting or data tools to extract, organize, validate, reconcile, and present accounting information.
- Follow established accounting procedures and internal controls, identify exceptions, and communicate questions or issues promptly.
- Participate in process improvement, documentation, data quality, and automation efforts by identifying opportunities and supporting implementation of practical solutions.
- Maintain organized work papers and provide clear status updates while managing multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or another closely related discipline
- One (1) year or more of increasingly diverse or complex experience in a related field in addition to degree
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or another closely related discipline
- Two (2) years or more of increasingly diverse or complex experience in a related field in addition to degree
- Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of accounting and finance principles, practices, and procedures to complete assignments of moderate complexity
- Experience with financial applications and query or reporting tools
- Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams
