Construction Materials and Testing Technician III

Kleinfelder is seeking a Construction Materials and Testing Technician III to join our Charlotte, NC office. The role involves inspecting and testing construction materials on high-profile projects across North Carolina, with occasional travel to the Charlotte‑Metro area.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field observations and material sampling/testing during construction of buildings, bridges, and roadways.
  • Test construction materials including soils, reinforcing steel, concrete, masonry, structural steel, fireproofing, metal decking, roofing, and paving.
  • Write daily field reports documenting contractor work and compliance with contract documents.
  • Cast field samples of concrete, masonry, and grout for strength verification.
  • Provide daily progress updates to the Department Manager via phone calls.
  • Pickup material samples and deliver to laboratory or equipment to site technicians.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of special inspection and/or construction materials testing experience.
  • Radiation safety training for operation of nuclear density gauge.
  • ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification.
  • NCDOT testing/inspection certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Proficient with company‑provided laptop or tablet and MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong work ethic and personal integrity.
  • Ability to monitor contractors and report results verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in preparing clear, accurate detailed reports and maintaining work‑activity records.
  • Attention to detail, quality, and safety.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Desired Certifications
  • NCDOT testing/inspection certifications (preferred).
  • ICC Special Inspector Certifications (Reinforced Concrete, Pre‑stressed Concrete, Soil, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Structural Welding, Structural Steel and Bolting).
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – American Welding Society (AWS).
Required Physical & Technical Abilities
  • Bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds repetitively; lift over 50 pounds using handling equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as ultrasonic non‑destructive testing machine, concrete cylinder press, etc.
  • NAVIGATE construction obstacles on foot and ladder; traverse rough ground and steep surfaces.
  • Work outdoors in variable weather at field sites and in labs with required safety protection.
