Role Description
Full-time, on-site CEI / Transportation Inspector role throughout North Carolina. The CEI / Transportation Inspector will perform daily field inspections of roadway, bridge, and related transportation construction activities to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards. Responsibilities include observing contractor work, documenting quantities, completing inspection reports, and maintaining accurate project records. The inspector will monitor materials, equipment, and workmanship for quality, safety, and adherence to schedules, and will assist in resolving field issues with project engineers, contractors, and agency representatives.
The role also includes performing and documenting field tests as required, attending progress meetings, and communicating construction progress, issues, and recommended actions in a clear and timely manner.
- Prior experience in construction inspection, transportation infrastructure, or civil engineering field work is highly beneficial.
- Relevant certifications such as NCDOT CEI training, roadway construction inspection, concrete/asphalt testing, or traffic control (or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe).
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply transportation construction plans, specifications, and standard details.
- Working knowledge of roadway, bridge, or utility construction methods, materials, and safety practices, including familiarity with state DOT standards (NCDOT experience preferred).
- Strong observational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify nonconforming work and recommend corrective actions.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with contractors, engineers, and agency representatives and for preparing clear field reports.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, traverse active construction sites, and comply with all safety requirements and PPE standards.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate’s degree or technical training in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
