Job Title:
HEO Technician
This role focuses on operating heavy equipment on civil construction and sitework projects across the Charlotte area. You will primarily perform fine grading of building pads and support a variety of sitework activities, including asphalt, mass grading, concrete, and site utilities. The position requires a hands‑on operator who is willing to step out of the equipment to perform labor tasks when needed and contribute to road and curb crews to help keep projects on schedule.
Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment, including bull dozers and excavators, to fine grade building pads and prepare sites for construction.
- Support mass grading, asphalt, concrete, and site utilities work as directed by site supervision.
- Assist road and curb crews as needed, including basic shovel work and other manual labor tasks.
- Read and work from grade stakes and utilize GPS and other grading controls when applicable to achieve accurate grades.
- Perform basic daily inspections of assigned equipment and report any maintenance or safety issues promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Work effectively as part of a crew, taking direction and adjusting to changing priorities on active construction sites.
- For labor‑focused hires, perform general construction labor duties and, after demonstrating reliability and performance over approximately six months, begin training on equipment such as rollers, articulated dump trucks, bull dozers, excavators, loaders, skid steers, and backhoes.
- Follow all site safety rules and participate actively in creating a safety‑conscious work environment.
- Adapt to working on different types of sites, including wide open grading projects and road crews where buildings have gone vertical.
- Minimum of 3 years of construction experience operating heavy equipment in a sitework or civil grading environment.
- Experience operating equipment such as bull dozers, excavators, trackhoes, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, rollers, or similar earth‑moving machinery.
- Proven ability to perform fine grading, particularly for building pads and sitework applications.
- Hands‑on construction experience in grading, site work, digging, and erosion control.
- Comfort working around and operating heavy equipment in active construction environments.
- Ability and willingness to perform physical labor, including shovel work and other manual tasks, in addition to operating equipment.
- Understanding of basic sitework practices, including reading and working from grade stakes.
- Ability to work safely in outdoor environments exposed to both hot and cold weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and desire to build a long‑term career in the construction industry.
Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with a civil grading contractor is highly beneficial for success in this role.
- Familiarity with GPS‑based grading systems and grade stake interpretation.
- Experience with a range of equipment such as rollers, articulated dump trucks, bull dozers, excavators, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and motor graders.
- Experience in erosion control, site utilities, and general sitework construction.
- Demonstrated interest in working with earth‑moving equipment and developing advanced operator skills.
- Ability to take direction, work as part of a team, and adapt to different tasks and jobsite conditions.
