Pipe Layer
The Pipe Layer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and repair of underground utility systems on civil construction projects, including water mains, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and related infrastructure. The Pipe Layer works as part of a utility crew to ensure all piping systems are installed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, and industry standards.
Responsibilities:
- Install underground utility pipe systems including water, sewer, and storm drainage lines.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, grade stakes, and utility specifications.
- Prepare trenches and foundation bedding for pipe installation.
- Lay, align, and secure various types of pipe, including PVC, HDPE, reinforced concrete, ductile iron, and corrugated pipe.
- Check line and grade using lasers, levels, and other surveying equipment.
- Assist equipment operators in safely placing pipe and related structures.
- Install fittings, valves, manholes, catch basins, and other utility components.
- Ensure proper pipe connections, joint sealing, and testing procedures are followed.
- Perform back filling, compaction, and restoration activities as required.
- Identify and report utility conflicts, safety concerns, and construction issues.
- Maintain job site safety in compliance with OSHA regulations and company policies.
- Assist with crew mobilization, site cleanup, and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, foremen, operators, and other crew members to meet project schedules.
Additional Skills &
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in underground utility construction or pipe laying.
- Knowledge of civil construction practices, utility installation methods, and trenching operations.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans, blueprints, and grade stakes.
- Familiarity with OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements.
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment and active construction sites.
- Valid driver's license preferred.

Work Environment:
The role is based on open-air construction sites in the Charlotte area, where you will work outdoors and be regularly exposed to the elements, including both hot and cold weather conditions. You may work on wide open grading sites or on road crews where buildings have already gone vertical, but roads will not be open to the public during operations. The environment is highly safety conscious, with an emphasis on following established safety procedures around heavy equipment and active construction activities.
Work involves operating and working around equipment such as dozers, excavators, rollers, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, articulated dump trucks, and motor graders, as well as performing manual labor tasks as needed.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlotte, NC.
Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
