ICC Special Inspector/CMT Technician – Charlotte, NC
Kleinfelder is looking for an ICC Special Inspector/CMT Technician to join our Charlotte office. The role involves inspecting and testing construction materials on high‑profile projects across North Carolina.
Responsibilities- Perform field observations and materials sampling/testing during construction of buildings, bridges, and roadways.
- Test construction materials including soils, reinforcing steel, concrete, masonry, structural steel, fireproofing, metal decking, roofing, and paving.
- Write daily field reports documenting work performed by contractors and indicating compliance or non‑compliance with contract documents.
- Cast field samples of concrete, masonry, and grout for strength verification.
- Provide daily phone updates to the department manager on project progress.
- Collect construction material samples and deliver them to the laboratory; deliver equipment to site technicians.
- 3+ years of special inspection and/or construction materials testing experience.
- Radiation safety training for operating a nuclear density gauge.
- ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Technician – Grade 1.
- ICC Reinforced Concrete certification.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Experience using a company‑provided laptop or tablet and working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong work ethic and personal integrity.
- Ability to monitor contractors and report results verbally and in writing.
- Attention to detail, quality, and safety.
- Work authorization to the United States.
- Bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lb repeatedly and over 50 lb using handling equipment.
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., ultrasonic NDT machine, concrete cylinder press).
- Maintain safe mobility over construction obstacles by foot and ladder.
- Work outside in variable weather at field sites and in labs.
- NCDOT testing/inspection certifications.
- ICC Special Inspector certifications (pre‑stressed concrete, soil, spray‑applied fireproofing, structural masonry, structural welding, structural steel, and bolting).
- PTI Unbonded Level 1 or 2.
- Cast auger piles.
