Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

WUNC News provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of ten stations.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for live hosting and operating the board on weekends. It serves as a back‑up host for weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings as needed. It conducts, records, and produces reporter debriefs with other WUNC reporters. It also is responsible for general assignment reporting that may include quick‑turnaround spot news, interviews, reporter debriefings, anchor wraps, online reports and/or well‑researched feature reports.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or background in independent academic or instructional activities, a relevant bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience may be accepted.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, And Experience

The Weekend Host/Reporter will be an experienced journalist with strong reporting, production, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, And Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, with a master’s degree preferred
  • At least three years of experience as a journalist and/or radio host, preferably in a public radio newsroom
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Creativity and initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and meet deadlines, working with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues effectively and collaboratively
  • A familiarity with North Carolina
Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Experience with public radio or related not‑for‑profit fundraising preferred.
