Job Description

This position is an End of Year position without benefits.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Plan and implement Physical Education (PE) coursework that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in accordance with goals established by the district; establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicate these objectives to students
  • Inspire students to prioritize health and fitness in their personal lives
  • Teach health classes covering grade-appropriate subject matter such as nutrition, fitness, basic anatomy, and first aid
  • Introduce students to a variety of team sports including teaching rules and techniques
  • Encourage students to display teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Adapt lesson plans and activities to accommodate a variety of students
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and development
  • Develop and maintain accurate records
  • Maintain inventory of physical education and sport equipment; ensure equipment is safe and in working order, request replacement or repairs as needed
  • Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Physical Education
  • Knowledge of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written
  • Skilled in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate instructional strategies
  • Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software
  • Ability to evaluate condition of PE equipment and request repair or replacement
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; work collaboratively within and across departments, external agencies, and the public
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related field required
  • Valid NC Teaching certification or eligible for NC Teaching certification in Health/PE required
  • Master’s degree in health or K-12 Physical Education preferred
  • Prior experience teaching Physical Education preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
  • Work often requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights and rarely, the lifting of weights above 30 pounds
  • Work regularly requires the exchange of accurate and detailed information through verbal and written communication
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
  • The work is usually sedentary but requires standing and walking around the classroom and school, and ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work
