Position: PT Instructor, Barbering (CE)

Barbering Instructor

Central Piedmont Community College is a comprehensive institution that places primary emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction. Continuing Education (CE) Barbering Instructors are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college while ensuring compliance with the North Carolina Board of Barber and Electrolysis Examiners.

Duties and Responsibilities

I. Mastery of Subject Matter Qualified candidates must demonstrate proficiency in barbering theory and practical application as defined by the North Carolina Board of Barber and Electrolysis Examiners, including but not limited to:

  • Haircutting techniques (tapering, fading, shear-over-comb, clipper-over-comb, razor cutting)
  • Shaving and facial hair design, including straight razor techniques
  • Chemical services (coloring, lightening, relaxing, perming)
  • Scalp and hair treatments
  • Sanitation, infection control, and safety procedures in accordance with NC Board laws and rules
  • Disinfection standards and blood exposure procedures
  • Professional image, ethics, and barber-client relations
  • North Carolina barbering laws, rules, and regulations
  • Shop management, entrepreneurship, and business practices

Additional expectations include:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive barbering curriculum aligned with state board competencies
  • Demonstrating proper use of barbering tools, implements, and equipment
  • Teaching theory related to anatomy, physiology, bacteriology, and chemistry as it applies to barbering
  • Preparing students for successful completion of the North Carolina State Board Examination (theory and practical)
  • Organizing practical skill evaluations to assess competency mastery
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback to students
  • Maintaining current knowledge of barbering trends, techniques, and industry standards

II. Teaching Performance

  • Teach assigned barbering courses in accordance with approved course outlines and state board requirements
  • Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning and clock-hour compliance
  • Employ effective teaching strategies to communicate theory and practical competencies
  • Supervise and evaluate students in both classroom and clinical/lab environments
  • Modify instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs
  • Utilize instructional technology, including learning management systems and digital resources, where appropriate
  • Encourage development of professional communication skills and critical thinking
  • Contribute to the development and revision of instructional materials
  • Develop, update, and post course syllabi in accordance with college policies

III. Evaluation of Student Learning

  • Establish measurable student learning outcomes aligned with state board competencies
  • Develop fair and consistent methods to evaluate student progress toward theory and practical mastery
  • Evaluate and document student performance in compliance with North Carolina Board requirements
  • Maintain accurate attendance, clock hours, practical performance records, and academic documentation
  • Submit required reports and final grade rosters in accordance with institutional deadlines
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs while upholding academic and regulatory standards

IV. Support of College Policies and Procedures

  • Teach assigned classes in a multi-campus or lab/clinic environment as needed
  • Ensure strict compliance with North Carolina Board sanitation and safety regulations
  • Prepare, distribute, and maintain course syllabi and approved outlines
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and institutional policy
  • Record grades, attendance, and clock hours according to college and state board requirements
  • Ensure clinic/lab environments meet inspection standards at all times

V. Participation in College, Division, and Program

  • Respond in a timely manner to information requests from college, division, and program administrator
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and accreditation activities
